Competition Guidelines - About the 2016 prize

 

During the 2016 Naxos Bassoon Days more than half of the pieces entered the 2016 ALEA III International Composition Competition were read and the following four were performed:

 

Jessica Rudman (USA) Distillations (No. 1, 2, 3) - August 24 concert
Josiah David Sprankle (USA) Sonata for Bassoon and Piano - August 28 concert
Martin Loridan (France) Lost in time-an ancient forest. Suite for bassoon quartet (Prelude) - August 28 concert
Kalynn Fleischman (USA) Lament for Four Bassoons (1st mov.) - August 28 concert

 

The following works received performances:

 

Josiah David Sprankle (USA) Sonata for Bassoon and Piano - Sweden, middle of September 2016
Jessica Rudman (USA) Distillations - Denmark, middle of September 2016 
Kalynn Fleischman (USA) Lament for Four Bassoons - Helsingborg, Sweden, middle of November 2016
Martin Loridan (France) Lost in time-an ancient forest. Suite for bassoon quartet - Helsingborg, Sweden, middle of November 2016

  • Juan José Bárcenas Cardona (Mexico) - Crucifix In A Deathhand for 4 bassoons (Second Prize)
  • Jessie Cox (Switzerland) - Earth for 2 bassoons
  • Vasiliki Legaki (UK/Greece) - The Passage for 7 bassoons (First Prize and Second Audience Prize)
  • Jonatan Sersam (Sweden) - Vindöga for 4 bassoons, contra bassoon, marimba, piano and double bass

Category 2 [ read about the competition categories ]

  • Chris Hung (Hong Kong) - Sands of Time for solo bassoon (First Prize)
  • Ana Krstajic (Serbia) - Troubadours for oboe and bassoon
  • Josiah David Sprankle (USA) - Sonata for Bassoon and Piano (First Audience Prize)

 

On November 19, 2016 the above works were performed under the direction of Holly Choe at Marsh Chapel, 735 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston. The concert started at 7:00 pm. Admission was free.

  • The 2016 ALEA III First Prize was awarded to Vasiliki Legaki and Chris Hung
  • The 2016 ALEA III Second Prize was awarded to Juan José Bárcenas Cardona

In addition these were two audience prizes awarded:

  • The 2016 Audience First Prize was awarded to Josiah David Sprankle
  • The 2016 Audience Second Prize was awarded to Vasiliki Legaki
