Keren (1986) by Iannis Xenakis (1922-2001)
Andreas-Rolandos Theodorou, trombone
"Keren" was commissioned by native Israeli Benny Sluchin (trombonist of the Paris-based Ensemble InterContemporain) and was premiered at the Musica Festival in Strasbourg, in September 1986. Keren is hebrew for "horn", and there is an archaic character to the music, particularly in the modal melodies (again emphasizing the interlocking fourths of the pelog scale), and in the bugle-like octaves that punctuate the music. - James Harley
